Katherine was fascinating to talk with because of her deep and thorough knowledge into how animal protection laws work. We ended up picking an office, and we kept a fan running during our interview with her, as our lighting equipment raised the temperature in her office even more. Sarah Baeckler, a primatologist with a group called the Chimpanzee Collaboratory who worked undercover at Yost's San Bernardino ranch, claims she saw the chimps being beaten to make them perform. We spent some time stacking legal volumes in different locations around her office, looking for the perfect location to film that had minimal noise and wouldn’t be too hot. The chief goal of the Collaboratory is the development of a mechanism whereby chimpanzees and other great apes might be granted legal rights that are equivalent to those of humans. She is also the co-founder of the Wildlife Advocacy Project.
